A Guide to the DL Leaflet

Posted on 28/10/2016

At Colour Print, we can produce all kinds of print projects – from a simple poster to a bespoke corporate brochure. One of the most common things we print is the DL leaflet. It’s versatile, cost-effective, and it gets results. Here’s our guide to this great product.

The DL Leaflet

Take an A4 sheet of paper and fold it twice. You’ll create a leaflet with three panels on each side – a six-page DL. DL stands for dimension lengthwise; it’s a third the size of A4, a common size for envelopes and flyers. Sometimes, DL leaflets are referred to as ‘trifold leaflets’, but this is something of a misnomer, as they only have two folds.

The Uses

The DL leaflet is incredibly versatile. It’s large enough to include a lot of information, but as it’s made from a single page of A4, it is cost-effective to produce. You can use a DL leaflet to promote pretty much anything. It’s often used in the tourism industry to promote an attraction or event, but it’s also great for introducing a new product or service.

The Structure

The six panels of a DL leaflet usually consist of one title page – the side that people will see when the leaflet is on a stand – and one back page with contact information. The four other panels are the ‘meat’ of the leaflet, containing relevant information and images. A DL leaflet is like an infomercial; it gives readers some details and includes a strong call to action.

The Design

DL leaflets are small, so it’s best to keep them simple. It’s tempting to cram them with text, but that can make them cluttered and confusing. Use short paragraphs and bullet points, a simple colour scheme, and a few relevant images. Think of a DL leaflet as the “highlights” of what you’re promoting. If you had to break it down into four key points, what would those be? Make each panel about one of those key points.

Of course, you can get creative with the format. You could open up a DL leaflet to find a map or a poster inside, taking up all three inside panels. You could include a die-cut section on the front panel, revealing part of the inside panel when the leaflet is on the stand and adding interest. You could even have a perforated section that people can tear off – perhaps with your business card.
