Why keeping it simple will often achieve the best results

Posted on 25/02/2014
From businesses in the holiday and tourism industries to retailers of all sizes, booklets are a wonderfully versatile commercial marketing tool. Compact and easy to distribute they can offer company information and details of products or services in an easy to read format. However, as with any other form of printed advertising it is vital that time and thought is put into the design of your booklet in order to achieve the best possible finish. Failure to do so is likely to create customer confusion and misinformation instead of attracting new business. To get around this there are a number of simple things you should consider when creating your next booklets.
  • If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it: Your chosen print partner will be able to take you through booklets they have designed for a numerous successful projects. Bear in mind that the designs they are showing you have been successful for a reason. You may have some great ideas of your own, but sometimes sticking to the tried and tested designs is for the best.
  • Keep it short and sweet: You are probably very passionate about your business, product or service and could more than likely talk for hours about every aspect. There is however a time and a place for it and a booklet is not it. Booklets are designed to quickly and efficiently convey all the important pieces of information the reader is looking for. More text generally leads to more confusion, so keep it simple.
  • Point people in the right direction: A reader who has to go through every word of your booklet to find the one piece of information they seek is likely to give up before they get there. Not all the information you give will be relevant to everyone, so consider the use of a contents page or good headers to guide people to the information they require.
  • Keep it simple, silly: People have very short attention spans. Whilst fancy font types and creative graphics look nice, like a magpie with a shiny thing they nearly always distract from the information you are trying to get across. As the design principle suggests, keep it simple!
